In today's video I'm going to show you how I plan my year, how I plan my life goals, and I'm also gonna go through my goal-setting workbook. if you're interested keep watching. Hello hello! Welcome back to the Whole Happy Life. So as many of you probably already know I've been working on the goal-setting work book for the past few weeks and today is the day it's finally out!You can find the link in the description, and you can also find the link in the pinned comment. Before I get into the core of the video where I'm going to discus show I plan my year and my goals I want to talk about 2018; how my 2018 goal-setting process has made such a big difference to me.
I have been goal-setting since 2015 but the first few years were not that effective be cause the techniques I was using, methods I was using, the workbooks I was using, we're not structured enough and I need a lot of structure in my life.So in 2018 I made my own workbook I use SMART goals in it which I'm going to discuss later on in this video, and honestly it's made such a big difference. we're very close to it but not quite there; but almost 100k, and honestly I couldn't have done it without goal-setting because I didn't have the best year on the personal side and I am inherently a very lazy and not so productive person. Having the tools, having a way to structure my life, made such a big difference. YouTube is just one example.
Goal-setting has helped me in other areas of my life too; things like reading, meditation. Basically goal-setting has given me the tools to create a life that I love and do all those things that I wanted to do but never got a chance of doing because I didn't have a plan. Goal-setting gave me that plan. Moving on...let's talk about my process for planning the year and how I use my workbook. So I like to use my work book in December so I can plan my year; I can start January with fresh goals, but honestly doesn't matter. You can start your goal setting anytime of the year, there's nothing that special about January, but I just like having a fresh start to the year.
This year's workbook, the 2019 workbook,is a 64 page digital file - it's a printable PDF which you can download and print and write on. It has plenty of space and lots and lots of easy instructions and this year's workbook is actually quite different from last year's. So last year's workbook only had goal setting and nothing else. This year's workbook I've added an entirely new section on tackling obstacles. So I realized over the course of 2018 that goal setting was not too hard for me, but sticking to my goals and dealing with obstacles was a struggle I actually didn't post on the channel in May and June, for most of May and June, because I was dealing with obstacles. So I have an entire section in the new work book on dealing with obstacles like procrastination, motivation issues,self-doubt, perfectionism, so definitely is something that I'm going to use whenever I'm trying to deal with obstacles.
Now let's get into the step-by-step process I use to plan my year. So the first step I take is to do a 2018 review; that is always the first thing I do before I start planning my goals for the next year because I like to have a look at what worked well in the year, what didn't work, where there's room for improvement, and any of the life lessons that I can take with me into the next year.Step two is Intentions and Inspiration. This is something I picked up from Leonine Dawson who also has a goal-setting workbook, and it's about figuring out your vision for the year.
So think of a theme, think of a word that will represent your year. So for 2018 my theme was 'Perseverance', because I'm not very good at it and I knew it was something I needed to work on.So for 2019 I actually don't know what my theme will be, I'll have to think about it. I like to think about a theme; I like to think about a quote of the year that I could use to inspire me throughout the year that goes along with my theme, and I also like to start thinking about the areas of development in my life; the areas that I want to work on. Step number three is Goal Brainstorming. So a lot of goal-setting workbooks don't actually this section; it goes straight into writing goals - and I found personally that never worked for me because I need to brainstorm first; I need to really think about different ideas and then refine them; that's just a process that works well for me.
When you're working on brainstorming for your goals, really think about what motivates you, and what you're really passionate about, and whether or not it fits into the vision that you have for your life - and why it's so important to you. Step number four is SMART Goals! And this is the stuff that's been a game-changer for me. I did not set SMART goals before in the prior years and that's why my goals never stuck. So I started setting SMART goals in 2018 and it has made a huge difference. So what is a SMART Goal? A SMART goal is a goal that is: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Bound. There is a lot more information in my workbook in case you're interested and you can also find information online. So what I like to do in step four is take all of the brainstormed goals from step three and refine them further, and create a SMART goal from them - and this way I have a goal that has a lot more structure and will be easier for me to stick to because I know exactly what I need to focus on.
Number five is Creating Steps and Tools to make the goals happen. So this is where I create an action plan to make those goals happen, because setting goals is the easy part - actually achieving them making the plan is the hard part. I like to write down all the steps I'll need to take to make a goal happen and I really like to simplify it because fit's a very complex list it's just not going to happen. It needs to be as simple as possible. At this point I also like to write down tools and support that I'll need - So for example let's say there's a goal that you need the support of your spouse or your roommate or your friend, and you can't do it without them. So I like to make sure that I know who that person is so I can tell them "hey you need to help me with my goal" but sometimes we need that support from other people - we can't do things on our own.
Step number six is Review. Now you could plan your year, you could plan your goals, you can plan your life, but if you're not reviewing, you're not going to stay on track for very long. So I like to do a monthly review with my friend on the phone, or we'll meet up, we'll talk about our SMART goals, we'll talk about what worked, what didn't work, and strategies going forward - and it really helps me because it helps me stay accountable and it also helps me figure out strategies that I wouldn't have thought by myself.
So I think it's so great to have someone to do goal-setting with. So if you have a friend who'd be interested in goal-setting, do it with them - they'll help you stay accountable and you're more likely to stay on track. Anyway if you enjoyed the video and you'd like to get a copy of the workbook for yourself, you can find the link in the pinned comment, and if you decide to purchase the workbook I would suggest printing it as soon as possible and getting started. It's exciting to work on goals, it's exciting to think of what's in store, and it's just so exciting to plan your life and give your life a direction. Next week or hopefully the week after, I'll be done setting my goals for 2019, and I'll walk you through some of the answers from my workbook. So hopefully you can get some inspiration for that! I will see you in the next Bye!
